Apperson Produces Record Breaking Season in 2007
David Apperson of Irene Golf & Country Club achieved what is believed to be the most dominant competitive MGA campaign in the association's 66 year history last year. While records are still being researched, it is hard to imagine that any player has accomplished as much in a single season.
The 50 year-old Apperson started his run by teaming with long-time golf partner Lanny Trottman of Windyke Country Club to shoot 10 under par for two days at Chickasaw Country Club and win the MGA Senior Four-Ball Championship by a single stroke over Buzz Fly and Ed Barnett.
He followed that performance up by winning his 6th MGA Amateur Championship by shooting a three-day total of 4 under par 212 at Windyke Country Club. That effort left him four shots clear of the field with Bobby Hudson finishing second at even par 216.
Joining forces again with Trottman, Apperson then finished in a tie for second in the MGA Four-Ball Championship that was won by Buzz Fly and Bobby Hudson.
Next up was the MGA Senior Amateur Championship where Apperson emerged as the winner by a single stroke when fellow competitor Gary Simpson made double-bogey seven (7) on the final hole at Spring Creek Ranch.
And just to show that the early season success was no fluke, Apperson then won the inaugural MGA Mid-Amateur Championship by three shots over Packard DeWitt by shooting 7 under par for two days at Ridgeway Country Club and Memphis Country Club.
